Bird Observer is Looking for a Bird Sightings Editor
Bird Observer, Inc. is a New England-based nonprofit organization that publishes a bimonthly journal and a corresponding website to support and promote the observation, understanding, and conservation of the wild birds of New England.
The Bird Sightings column is a regular staple of Bird Observer, with a species listing and narrative discussion about sightings in Massachusetts. Each issue covers a two-month period. Sightings are submitted to the editor in Microsoft Excel format by regional compilers. Records are pared down, rare sightings verified—usually through eBird—and listed in Microsoft Word. In addition to producing the species list, the editor is responsible for maintaining an abbreviations list and following up-to-date taxonomy (AOS). The editor writes half of the narrative, putting the records into context, and edits the other half.
The editor must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, eBird, and have a good knowledge of the status and distribution of birds in Massachusetts. Proficiency in using macros will help with data manipulation in Excel. Good proofreading skills are important, as is the ability to follow an in-house style sheet. With multiple compilers and an editorial team, working to deadlines is crucial for this role.
