Volunteer Staff Opening: Proofreader

VOLUNTEER STAFF OPENING: PROOFREADER

Bird Observer has an immediate opening for an experienced proofreader. The proofreader reviews the galley proofs in PDF format to ensure the accuracy of accuracy of six bimonthly issues per year before they go to the printer.

Tasks include:

  • reading all text, titles, and captions for spelling, typographical, and grammatical errors.
  • double checking that editing is consistent with the Bird Observer style sheet and the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • checking for omissions or repeated elements in the text.
  • ensuring the accuracy of the Bird Species Sightings lists.
  • seeing that photos, captions, maps, charts, tables, and figures relate to the text correctly and are in the proper places.
  • checking the graphic elements of the issue: front and back covers, table of contents, masthead, pagination, footers, titles, fonts, and type sizes.

Qualifications:

  • experience as a proofreader or copyeditor.
  • detail-oriented, organized, and accurate.
  • has the time and ability to meet Bird Observer’s deadlines; an issue needs to be proofread within 48-72 hours.
