When you read this column, my guide dog, Alvin, will likely be retired after more than 10 years of guiding me, well beyond the typical length of service for these dogs. We have very rarely been apart. Over our working life, we walked the equivalent of Boston to Los Angeles, back to Boston, and back to Los Angeles. We have traveled to nearly two dozen of the United States, four European countries, and Canada. We have navigated most available modes of transportation on land, the water, and the air.
