Bird Sightings: November-December 2023

Weather

November was characterized by seasonable temperatures. Exceptions were highs of 66 degrees in Boston on both November 7 and November 17. The month was also dry, with precipitation recorded on just nine days and totaling 1.93 inches, nearly two inches below normal. Most of this precipitation occurred during a pre–Thanksgiving Day storm on November 21–22. The storm brought heavy rain to most areas and some snow in areas west and north of Boston. Fitchburg received four inches of snow and Worcester nearly two inches. The storm also brought high winds, with gusts over 50 mph noted on Cape Cod and the Islands. At Andrews Point in Rockport, southeast winds that turned northeast produced an epic flight of Dovekies. Birders braving the winds recorded over 15,000 Dovekies and over 5,000 Black-legged Kittiwakes close to shore.
