Cold temperatures continued into January after the coldest December since 2017. Boston temperatures for the month averaged 28.2 degrees, nearly two degrees below normal. Eighteen of the 31 days during the month were below normal. The high temperature was 53 degrees on January 15 and the low was a frigid 5 degrees on January 24. The first significant snowstorm occurred January 18–19, with the highest accumulation noted in Bristol County, where Rehoboth and Westport recorded 7.1 and 6.1 inches, respectively. Boston had 5.3 inches and most of the Greater Boston area had between 4.5 and 6.5 inches. On Sunday January 25, the day the Patriots bested the Denver Broncos to advance to the Super Bowl, nearly two feet of snow fell in some communities, the largest snowstorm in four years. Most areas saw light fluffy snow, but parts of southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island experienced heavy snow at rates of 1–2 inches per hour. Gloucester reported 27 inches, while most areas recorded between 15 to 20 inches. The total snowfall for the month in Boston was 29.8 inches, more than double the normal of 14.3 inches.
